Chapter 11

“So, what do you know about Moose McGovern and his wife?” Claire asked Daisy, her legs swinging on the edge of the long pier.

She’d just gotten home after work and still had the scent of cooking caramel caught in her hair and a white dusting of flour spilled down the front of her jeans, but Daisy had asked if she wanted to take a walk on such a pretty afternoon, and they’d wound up down by the bay.

The wooden pier was a great spot to sit and watch what was happening on the sparkling water, and to do some people watching, too. To their left they could see the large ferry at its port, waiting for people going to the islands, and a steady trickle of small boats coming back into the bay after a full day of fishing. In the marina, Claire could see people unloading equipment and buckets of bait and fish, and hear happy chatter as the boatmen exchanged news about their day.

“Are you trying to avoid talking about it?” Daisy asked cautiously. She was swinging her legs, too, both of her thin hands gripping onto the edge of the wood while she leaned forward a bit. Her fringe of dark, straight hair was lifting in the coastal breeze, and her face was serious.

“About Moose?” Claire asked, her eyebrows drawn together in confusion.

“No, not about Moose.”

“About what?”

Claire’s landlord rolled her eyes at her and waited, not saying another word. Finally, Claire sighed in recognition.

“Maybe I am.” She looked over at Daisy, but only saw compassion on her plain face, not judgment. “So, I guess you heard about Scott being upset with me?”

“Yeah, I heard.” Daisy looked out at the water, her voice casual. “Look, lots of people come to the beach, so it's not always the best place to have an argument, or something you’d want to keep private. Too many witnesses. There are just a lot of wagging tongues in this town. That’s small-town living. People talk about things.”

Claire gave an exasperated sigh. “Well, I'm so glad I could entertain the good folks of Brightwater Bay with the details of my personal life,” she bit off, her tone harsh. She could feel the flush of blood to her face as she thought of how many people had speculated about her and Scott, and the sorts of things they might have said. It was hard enough trying to start up her life again after her husband’s death, but the knowledge that others had been watching her interaction with Scott and talking about it felt almost like a betrayal.

“It's not like that. Honest, it's not,” Daisy quickly assured her. “We've all known Scott for years, and we like you, too. We do. They think you two are a good couple. There’s just a lot of people who think you and Scott should wind up together, that's all. When they see that might not be happening it makes them sad.”

“And it makes them talk about it, apparently,” Claire responded, looking at Daisy critically.
